Best Regional Bank Companies To Own For 2014

As a fan of regional banks over their much larger compatriots, PNC Financial (NYSE: PNC  ) is one bank that has always interested me, so I decided to take a deeper look at the bank to get a better understanding of how it operates. Last week, we looked at where the Pittsburgh-based bank made its money, as well as just how profitable it is. With this article, we will look at a small -- yet very profitable -- piece of PNC's business, and why investors should take note of it.

As mentioned in both of the previous articles, PNC Financial breaks its business into six different business segments, the largest being its traditional retail banking business. However, it is the smallest segment that is perhaps most interesting:

Liquidmetal Technologies, Inc. (Liquidmetal Technologies), incorporated in 1987, is materials technology company that develops and commercializes products made from amorphous alloys. As of January 28, 2012, the Company operated 327 stores located across 32 states and offered online shopping at www.shoecarnival.com. Its average store carries approximately 28,500 pairs of shoes in four general categories, such as men��, women��, children�� and athletics. In addition to footwear, its stores carry selected accessory items complementary to the sale of footwear.

The Company operates a single 410,000 square foot distribution center located in Evansville, Indiana. Better weather in April improved the sales trajectory and helped the company beat expectations. Its outlook for the current quarter was in line with estimates with an EPS of $0.26-$0.30 and same-stores increasing 3-5%.

SciQuest, Inc. was founded in 1995 and is headquartered in Cary, North Carolina.
