Key to a healthy, happy retirement: Having fun

Jake Chesson was approaching retirement and sensed something had to change. An avid cyclist, he pushed himself hard on his bike and found himself dreading riding.

"I know me, and if I'm not having fun, I'm not going to stick with exercise,'' he says.

His solution: He started a Meetup social club online for people who want to have fun exercising outdoors. They ride bikes, hike, kayak and go ice skating. One thing they don't dwell on is how fast they go. They take breaks. Sometimes, they even sip a glass of wine.

"That wasn't the old me,'' says Chesson, of Falls Church, Va.. "We never took breaks when we were riding. But when you start to reach 60, you need to figure out what your next game is going to be and how to come out a winner."

For the millions of Baby Boomers coming up on retirement, making investments in exercising, having fun, making new friends and continuing to learn are the closest thing to finding the fountain of youth, according to Harvard researchers. The 73-year-old Harvard Study of Adult Development is one of the oldest and most respected studies on aging in the country.

"Exercise is the No. 1 ticket item to have for ensuring a long, happy life,'' says Robert Waldinger, a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Waltham, Mass., and director of the Harvard study. "It protects your heart and prevents disability later in life."

Chesson, 65, retired two years ago from a law practice and says he "is more active now than ever before. I never used to find time for the fun stuff."

Setting new goals prior to retirement can help you manage the stress that often comes with ending a lifetime of work, says Laurie Lawson, a life transition coach in New York.

Even someone who can afford to! "take cruise after cruise still needs a game plan for when the ship finally docks," she says.

For some, the answer is jolting. In a Harvard study of 5,422 people 50 and older, those who had retired were 40% more likely to have had a heart attack or stroke than those who were still working. The increase was more pronounced during the first year after retirement and leveled off after that.

Those pitfalls are mostly preventable, according to the Mayo Clinic. Healthy eating and exercise help reduce your risk factors for heart disease and stroke by lowering blood pressure, high cholesterol and keeping off unwanted pounds. Exercise also fuels your brain and can help delay cognitive deterioration, a part of aging for many.

"When you no longer have a job, you need to find a new mission," Chesson says. "My Meetup club is my new mission." He has attracted nearly 800 members, many of whom are retired or thinking about retirement. Two weeks ago, after meeting at a German bistro for a beer and lunch in Leesburg, Va., they walked several miles on a trail to a vineyard, where they sampled wine before heading back on foot to return home.

"That's a brilliant approach to retirement,'' says Dan Buettner, author of The Blue Zones: 9 Lessons for Living Longer. "We all need to do what we enjoy rather than what is a chore."

It's even OK to skip moderate to intense exercise, unless you want to break a sweat, according to the Mayo Clinic. Doing 10 minutes of exercise three times a day can be almost as beneficial as a 30-minute workout. Buettner studied health habits in Sardinia, an Italian island inhabited by some of world's longest-lived men. Many are shepherds, who walk up to 5 miles a day over hillsides.

"They don't work out hard or pump iron,'' says Buettner. "They don't worry about running marathons. Their day is laced with gentle or moderately stressful physical activity. "

His research and the Harvard Study of Adult Development have similar findings about other clues to st! aying hea! lthy after retiring. Among them:

• Make new best friends. "People who replace their work contacts with other contacts are happiest,'' says Waldinger. "You see a lot of people every day at work, and it's energizing and sustaining. People want to find ways to plan who they're going to see. You don't want to have a well-feathered nest and to be socially isolated."

• Work those brain cells. "The happiest people in our group learn new things,'' Waldinger says. "It might be taking a college course, or learning a new language or refinishing furniture. Learning seems to carry its own satisfaction."

• Find new meaning. "Purpose is an easy thing for younger generations,'' says Buettner. "You graduate, get a job, get married and have kids. But then you stop working and lose that thing that gets you up every morning. Finding what gets you out of the easy chair is every bit as important as having a physical fitness plan."

Some people might need to dig to find new purpose, says transition coach Lawson. "But I tell them they finally get to be the boss and to enjoy it. "

Waldinger adds that finding new purpose need not be "fraught'' with emotional upheaval.

"That's the stereotype,'' he says. "But it is a transition — and one that the happiest people enjoy making. They can start having fun without having to worry about being productive all the time."

Today the satellite pay-TV provider filed a letter with the Federal Communications Commission pointing to media reports about a Department of Justice investigation into charges of bribery by telecommunications equipment provider UTStarcom (NASDAQ: UTSI  ) , also known as UTSI. The DOJ says the company gave $7 million to Chinese government officials in return for telecommunications sales contracts. In 2009 UTStarcom admitted to bribery and agreed to pay $1.5 million.

The bribery, a violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, was alleged to have taken place at least partly during the time that the SoftBank CEO was in charge of UTSI.

"The affiliation between SoftBank and UTSI seems to have been close. Specifically, Mr. Masayoshi Son was Chairman of the Board of UTSI ... [during a period in] which a portion of the conduct in question occurred," DISH wrote in its filing. "Dish believes that this information is relevant to the public interest analysis of the proposed transaction, and that it is incumbent upon the proposed transferee SoftBank to provide a full explanation of these matters."

    Getty Images SAN FRANCISCO -- Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) plans to cut as many as 16,000 more jobs in a major ramp-up of CEO Meg Whitman's years-long effort to turn around the personal computer-maker and relieve pressure on its profit margins. Whitman said the turnaround remained on track and her raised target reflected how HP continued to find areas to streamline across its broad portfolio, which encompasses computing, networking, storage and software. But some analysts wondered whether it signaled a worsening outlook for the coming year, or if more jobs may be cut. "The rationale makes sense," said RBC analyst Amit Daryanani. But "you do worry if there's a finality to this process, or if it's an ongoing thing that may affect morale at the end of the day. So far the trend has been worrisome." HP, whose sprawling global operations employ more than 250,000, estimated about three years ago when it first hatched its sweeping overhaul that it would need to shed 27,000 jobs. That number rose to 34,000 last year. On Thursday, it estimated another 11,000 to 16,000 more jobs needed to go, scattered across different countries and business areas. That took the grand total under Whitman's restructuring to 50,000.     Finally, Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO  ) shares finished down 0.6% after the networking specialist announced yet another acquisition, saying it would buy Sourcefire, which provides network security services, for $2.7 billion. The deal will provide additional revenue for Cisco, but won't necessarily lead to integration between the systems, according to analysts. Sourcefire finished up 28%, in line with the premium Cisco offered.

    Another potential earnings short-squeeze trade idea is cloud services player J2 Global (JCOM), which is set to release its numbers on Tuesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect J2 Global to report revenue $130.43 million on earnings of 71cents per share.

    The current short interest as a percentage of the float for J2 Global is extremely high at 20.6%. That means that out of the 43.70 million shares in the tradable float, 9.01 million shares are sold short by the bears. If the bulls get the earnings news they're looking for, then shares of JCOM could easily explode higher post-earnings.

    From a technical perspective, JCOM is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last six months, with shares moving higher from its low of $38.07 to its recent high of $56.24 a share. During that uptrend, shares of JCOM have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of JCOM within range of triggering a major breakout trade post-earnings.

    If you're in the bull camp on JCOM, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above its 52-week high at $56.42 a share (or Tuesday's intraday high if higher) on high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 292,457 shares. If that breakout hits, then JCOM will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $65 to $75 a share.

    I would simply avoid JCOM or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout, and then drops below some key near-term support levels at $54 to $53 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then JCOM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its ne

Atlas of Giving Raises Donation Forecast for Rest of Year

Nonprofit organizations can expect donors to be more generous this year—good news for the many groups that have been just holding on.

The latest Atlas of Giving forecast indicates that charitable giving in the U.S. will amount to $401 billion in 2013, compared with $369 billion at the end of 2012, an increase of 8.6%.

This year-end estimate is higher than one issued in April. The report attributed the more optimistic outlook to strong economic performance.

Year-to-date charitable giving nationwide totaled $231 billion at the end of July, an increase of 8.5% from 2012, according to the new monthly report.

Hot Gas Stocks To Own For 2015

Donors gave $34 billion in July, up 1.9% from June, and were expected to contribute about the same amount in August.

The new report said religion would remain the largest giving sector this year, despite a one percentage point drop to 35% overall from 2012.

Education is the next biggest sector at 16%.

Nature/environment, the smallest sector at 2%, will enjoy the sharpest increase in donations in 2013, up 12.7%.

    Overall, the most popular emerging market ETFs experienced much sharper declines than the less-than-1% drop the Dow posted this week. Vanguard Emerging Markets (NYSEMKT: VWO  ) and iShares Emerging Markets (NYSEMKT: EEM  ) were both down just under 3% for the week. But when you drill down to look for particular culprits in the emerging markets, you don't have to look very far to find that it was generally a broad-based decline:

    In China, more concerns about a slowdown in the manufacturing industry put pressure on stocks. The Shanghai index didn't move much, but one key ETF tracking the Chinese market sank nearly 4% in response to the news, largely on weakness in telecom giant China Mobile (NYSE: CHL  ) , which plays a commanding role in many emerging market-focused ETFs.
    � Indian stocks suffered from some of the same macroeconomic issues, with the Bombay market's index down about 3% and ETF tracking the market falling 4% to 5%. The Indian finance minister responded to the decline, which many blamed on Fed Chair Ben Bernanke's comments, by saying, "We think that Bernanke's statement has been misunderstood or misinterpreted." Insurance Products

The Insurance Products segment offers a range of protection products and services aimed at serving the financial needs of its customers throughout their lives. These pro! ducts are sold to individuals and corporations, as well as other institutions and their respective employees. It is organized in three businesses: Group Life, Individual Life and Non-Medical Health.

The Group Life insurance products and services include variable life, universal life, and term life products. It offer group insurance products as employer-paid benefits or as voluntary benefits where all or a portion of the premiums are paid by the employee. These group products and services also include employee paid supplemental life and are offered as standard products or may be tailored to meet specific customer needs.

The Individual Life insurance products and services include variable life, universal life, term life and whole life products. Additionally, through its broker-dealer affiliates, it offers a full range of mutual funds and other securities products. The products within both Group Life and Individual Life include Variable Life, Universal Life, Term Life and Whole Life. Variable life products provide insurance coverage through a contract that gives the policyholder the policyholder flexibility in investment choices and, depending on the product, in premium payments and coverage amounts, with certain guarantees. With variable life products, premiums and account balances can be directed by the policyholder into a variety of separate account investment options or directed to the Company�� general account. In the separate account investment options, the policyholder bears the entire risk of the investment results.

Universal life products provide insurance coverage on the same basis as variable life, except that premiums, and the resulting accumulated balances, are allocated only to the Company�� general account. Universal life products may allow the insured to increase or decrease the amount of death benefit coverage over the term of the contract and the owner to adjust the frequency and amount of premium payments.

Term insurance products are sometimes referred to as pure protection products, in that there are typically no savings or investment elements. Term contracts expire without value at the end of the coverage period when the insured party is still living.

Whole life products provide a guaranteed benefit upon the death of the insured in return for the periodic payment of a fixed premium over a predetermined period. Premium payments may be required for the entire life of the contract period, to a specified age or period, and may be level or change in accordance with a predetermined schedule. Whole life insurance includes policies that provide a participation feature in the form of dividends. Policyholders may receive dividends in cash or apply them to increase death benefits, increase cash values available upon surrender or reduce the premiums required to maintain the contract in-force.

The Non-Medical Health products and services include dental insurance, group short- and long-term disability, individual disability income, long-term care (LTC), critical illness and accidental death & dismemberment coverage. Other products and services include employer-sponsored auto and homeowners insurance provided through the Auto & Home segment and prepaid legal plans. The Company also sells administrative services-only (ASO) arrangements to some employers. The products in this area are Dental, Disability and Long-term Care (LTC). Dental products provide insurance and ASO plans that ass! ist emplo! yees, retirees and their families in maintaining oral health while reducing out-of-pocket expenses and providing superior customer service. Dental plans include the Preferred Dentist Program and the Dental Health Maintenance Organization. Disability products provide a benefit in the event of the disability of the insured. This benefit is in the form of monthly income paid until the insured reaches age 65. In addition to income replacement, the product may be used to provide for the payment of business overhead expenses for disabled business owners or mortgage payment protection. This is offered on both a group and individual basis. LTC products provide protection against the potentially high costs of LTC services. Retirement Products

The Retirement products segment includes a variety of variable and fixed annuities that are primarily sold to individuals and employees of corporations and other institutions. The products in this area are Variable Annuities and Fixed Annuities. Variable annuities provide for both asset accumulation and asset distribution needs. Variable annuities allow the contract holder to make deposits into various investment options in a separate account, as determined by the contract holder. The risks associated with such investment options are borne entirely by the contract holder, except where guaranteed minimum benefits are involved.

Fixed annuities provide for both asset accumulation and asset distribution needs. Fixed annuities do not allow the same investment flexibility provided by variable annuities, but provide guarantees related to the preservation of principal and interest credited.

Corporate Benefit Funding

The Corporate Benefit Funding segment includes a range of annuity and investment products, including, guaranteed interest products and other stable value products, income annuitie! s, and se! parate account contracts for the investment management of defined benefit and defined contribution plan assets. This segment also includes certain products to fund postretirement benefits and company, bank or trust owned life insurance used to finance non-qualified benefit programs for executives. The products in this area are Stable Value Products, Pensions Closeouts, Torts and Settlements, Capital Markets Investment Products and other Corporate Benefit Funding Products and Services. The Company offers general account guaranteed interest contracts, separate account guaranteed interest contracts, and similar products used to support the stable value option of defined contribution plans. It also offers private floating rate funding agreements that are used for money market funds, securities lending cash collateral portfolios and short-term investment funds.

The Company offers general account and separate account annuity products, generally in connection with the termination of defined benefit pension plans, both in the United States and the United Kingdom. It also offers partial risk transfer solutions that allow for partial transfers of pension liabilities and annuity products that include single premium buyouts. It offers strategies for complex litigation settlements, primarily structured settlement annuities.     Although we were not surprised by the move yesterday we did not take an overly aggressive stance in positioning the portfolio to benefit from the Fed not tapering. We were long, but we did not initiate any trades solely for the purpose to benefit from the announcement. We are more interested in the long-term wealth building of portfolios right now and as such believe that readers should look to our recent winners that had pullbacks yesterday as buying opportunities. Specifically, we like Ameritrade (AMTD), Charles Schwab (SCHW) and MetLife (MET) which all saw pullbacks ranging from 2.5% to a bit over 5.5% in yesterday's session. We highlighted the discount brokers as a sector to watch right before the latest takeoff and our belief is that although rates remain unchanged the brokerage business will continue to perform strongly. The next big move up will be as rates rise, but even if one has to wait for this move it will be well worth it for one's portfolio.

PrimaLoft Products segment

The PrimaLoft Products segment includes sale of insulation for outdoor clothing, gloves, footwear, sleeping bags, and home furnishings. This segment has sales operations in the United States, Europe, and Asia, through which it sells products produced by third parties. This segment also generates a portion of its income as royalties from the licensing of its intellectual property.

Engineered Fabrics segment

The Engineered Fabrics segment supplies consumable fabrics used to process paper pulp, as well as fabrics used in a range of industries other than papermaking. These other products include belts used to make non wovens, fiber cement building products, roofing shingles and corrugated sheets used in boxboard, as well as belts used in tannery and textile applications.
