18 New England colleges get green ranking

Northern New England has made a strong showing in the Princeton Review's 2014 guide to "green colleges," with 18 colleges and universities receiving recognition.

Vermont has six colleges that received the green ranking. Two of them, Middlebury College and Green Mountain College, earned the highest possible score. Maine has seven green colleges, including the College of the Atlantic, which also received the highest score. New Hampshire has five green colleges.

As a region, the three states have the highest number of green campuses per capita in the country, according to the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council.

Best Electric Utility Stocks To Buy For 2016

The annual guide, based on surveys of four-year colleges, was produced by the Princeton Review in collaboration with the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council. Schools can receive a green ranking if they demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability in their academic offerings, campus buildings, activities and career preparation, according to the Princeton Review guide.

The survey found that what's good for the environment is also good for recruitment.

All told, 61% of high school students surveyed said information about an institution's green commitment would influence their decision on whether to attend, according to the guide.

"It's not just that the students were asking for it, but the prospective students were demanding it," said Rachel Gutter, director of the Center for Green Schools at USGBC in Washington, D.C. She said green certifications are being used to "enhance a college's profile and attract more support and better students."

The northern New England colleges making the list were Bates College, Bowdoin College, Colby College, College of the Atlantic, Unity College, University of Maine and University of Maine at Farmington, all in Maine; Dartmouth Coll! ege, Keene State College, Southern New Hampshire University and the University of New Hampshire, all in New Hampshire; and Bennington College, Champlain College, Green Mountain College, Middlebury College, Saint Michael's College and the University of Vermont, all in Vermont.

CME Electronic Trading Halt Pulls Pit Traders Back Into the Fray

Top 5 Quality Companies To Invest In Right Now

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Even in the era of electronic trading and high-frequency Flash Boys, sometimes wires get crossed.

Electronic trade at CME (CME) froze on Tuesday, causing floor traders to experience a little nostalgia as they were forced to use an open outcry system to transmit orders. CME operates the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the Chicago Board of Trade and other exchanges worldwide.

Traders realized that a glitch was occurring at around 2 p.m. Eastern time, when prices failed to update on order entries. This led to a flood of floor traders back into trading pits, using traditional hand signals and shouting to communicate orders.

Initially, some feared that the switch to open-outcry trading would strain the system and lead to more issues at CME. But without floor trading, the entire system would have shut down. CME is the largest futures exchange operator in the world as measured by market capitalization and contracts traded. The CME's various exchanges trade around 1.1 million agricultural commodity contracts a day, meaning halted prices have the potential to disrupt markets across the globe. Tuesday's issues affected farmers, grain companies and investors who sought to buy and sell derivative contracts. Some of their orders were canceled when submitted electronically, and there was also some difficulty for floor traders to answer and respond to all the telephone orders received. Sterling Smith, a futures specialist at Citigroup, told the Wall Street Journal that the day was aggravating for producers and dealers of commodities who really needed to hedge supplies. Futures and options trading in 31 different markets from wheat to rainfall futures were halted, but CME clarified that oils and metals trading was not affected. The exchange also did not give exact reasoning behind problems that halted electronic trading. Although Chicago's floor-based trading has seen its influence decline over the past decade, CME keeps pit trading open as an option for brokers and investment managers who prefer the method. The rush of activity Tuesday was embraced by market veterans who saw it as an opportunity to show their relevance after years of watching computers take over the industry. "It was just a blast from the past," Jerome Israelov, a veteran grain floor trader who lost his voice in the shouting, told the Chicago Tribune, "It was just a fun, fun hour." CME resumed electronic trading Wednesday morning, with a spokesperson claiming that the issue had been resolved. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Carroll]

The company's generic drug segment should also help push emerging market sales. Abbott markets generic pharmaceuticals outside the U.S. only, and while the division isn't growth-oriented -- sales actually fell arou! nd 2% for the quarter -- it provides an entry for the company to push into lucrative new markets such as India, where generics make up the large majority of the country's retail market. The company will face tougher competition in this industry, however: Firms such as India-based Dr. Reddy's (NYSE: RDY  ) have also pushed hard into emerging markets lately, and Dr. Reddy's in particular should benefit from its being headquartered in one of the industry's top locales.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Teva has dropped 7.7% to $37.85 today at 3:23 p.m. but doesn’t seem to be spreading though the generic drug space. Taro Pharmaceuticals (TARO) ha gained 1.1% to $79, while Actavis (ACT) has gained 1.2% to $156.25 and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (RDY) has advanced 1% to $40.24. August has been a downer for stocks but if anyone can be called a winner this month it’s the energy sector, and more specifically oil stocks.

Associated Press

The Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) has gained 1.5% to $82.34 today, by far the best performance of any sector in the S&P 500. The S&P 500 has fallen 2.9%.

Oil and energy stocks are among the best performing stocks in the S&P 500 this month as well. Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD), for instance, has gained 13% to $175.42 in August, while Chesapeake Energy (CHK) has jumped 13% to $26.36. Halliburton (HAL), meanwhile, has gained 8.7% to $49.07. All three are among the top-ten gainers in the S&P 500.

By now we’re all aware of the battle raging between Amazon.com (AMZN) and Hachette over the pricing of eBooks. While the consumer is certainly the loser as the two big corporations go head to head, there’s likely a winner from the battle royale as well–Barnes & Noble (BKS).

  • [By Andrew Marder]

Shares of Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS  ) crashed yesterday on the news that I had purchased a Nook over the weekend -- or possibly because the rumor that Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) was going to buy the Nook looks to have been nothing more than a rumor. The jury is still out on the final cause.

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

Shares of Barnes & Noble (BKS) were falling before the close Thursday, on news that John Malone Liberty Media (LMCA) is selling most of its 17% stake in the bookseller.

Liberty Media reached an agreement with Barnes & Noble to sell 90% holdings, which will result in the loss of one of its two board seats. The shares are being purchased by institutional investors, with the sale expected to close next week.

As The Wall Street Journal reports, Liberty didn say how much it was selling the share for, but the move comes after Barnes & Noble has enjoyed a big rally, climbing 66% since February through yesterday close. A person close to the deal says that the price was higher than $250 million, which would give Liberty a good deal of profit, as it paid $204 million for the entire stake in 2011. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Carroll]

The export boost will help out some of Germany's biggest corporations and stocks, however. German automakers have taken a beating in the recession, and May didn't help: New-car sales in the country fell by nearly 10% for the month after notching a rare gain in April. Both BMW (NASDAQOTH: BAMXY  ) and Daimler (NASDAQOTH: DDAIF  ) have performed better than many carmakers in Germany this year, but both saw sales flatten over the early part of the year. Daimler's stock has performed well in the year so far, but to avoid any fall, the company -- along with BMW -- announced that it will not participate in the traditional summer break during which German automakers close their factories for a few weeks. Right now, neither company can afford that.

  • [By Alexander MacLennan]

We talk a lot about the growing middle class in China, but the growing wealth of the rich elite is also a valuable market. Luxury automakers know this well and have been reacting with billions in investment. Late last month, Daimler AG (NASDAQOTH: DDAIF  ) announced that it and its joint-venture partner would spend 1 billion euros to double production of Mercedes-Benz vehicles. This comes as demand for Mercedes-Benz vehicles continues to rise, with deliveries rising 57% in the first two months of this year.

Advisors' Opinion:

What: Shares of solar manufacturer ReneSola (NYSE: SOL  ) jumped as much as 26% today after the company increased guidance.

So what: Management said that second-quarter shipments would be 760 MW-770 MW, well above the previous expectation of 700 MW-720 MW. Gross margin is also expected to be 5%-6%, above the 3%-5% previously expected.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

There will be winners, though. Shares of polysilicon maker Renewable Energy fell 7% in trading immediately after the announcement because the company will likely see either lower prices or lower demand. But shares of GCL Poly, who manufactures in China and is the biggest polysilicon maker in the world, jumped 4% on Friday after the news was announced.Renesola (NYSE: SOL  ) and LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK  ) also have lots of unused polysilicon capacity that will likely experience more demand because of the move. The question is if they have sufficient quality to supply the industry.

I should mention that just last week, we added GT Advanced Technologies to ourSmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio for bothfundamentals and technical reasons and we are already up almost 9%.

Advisors' Opinion:

But the real news is the near vertical trajectory in share prices for the two stocks. This could be another manifestation of the market hunger for some momentum plays, as we noted earlier this morning the bump to share prices for both JinkoSolar Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: JKS) and Shutterstock Inc. (NASDAQ: SSTK), both of which held secondary share sales this morning.

  • [By Aaron Levitt]

Like FSLR, CSIQ and JinkoSolar (JKS), ReneSola has moved beyond its original focus of creating just wafers. That means SOL stock investors are now betting on one of the more integrated solar stocks … and one that has grown to become a strong module shipper over the last few years. That includes outsourcing modules to nations like India, South Africa and Poland. SOL has done well in this regard and has been catching up to sizzling solar stocks like Yingli Green Energy (YGE).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Last Thursday when I suggested American Community (OTCMKTS:ACYD) was a stock that should be shed immediately, and replaced with a position in Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL), I didn't win a lot of friends. After all, ACYD was the market's newest darling, in the middle of a red-hot runup, while RSOL was "just another solar name" that happened to be lucky enough to stumble its way above a key support line. Well, I hate to be the one to day I told you so, but, I told you so. American Community shares are down 35% since then, while Real Goods Solar shares are up 36% in the meantime. Both stocks seem pretty well entrenched in their current trends too.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

There's no denying that LDK Solar Co., Ltd (NYSE:LDK) has been a notable laggard this year compared to performances from First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:FSLR) and Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL). RSOL is up nearly 180% year-to-date, with a decent chunk of that gain unfurling in just the last couple of months. FSLR is up 25% for the year so far, though that more modest gain would have been much bigger had it not been for February's 24% plunge. Meanwhile, LDK shares are down 22% year-to-date, and have barely even blipped despite the fact that solar energy has become all the rage again in recent months.

  • [By John Udovich]

Small cap solar stock Andalay Solar Inc (OTCMKTS: WEST) has largely cratered for investorsverses solar stock peers Real Goods Solar, Inc (NASDAQ: RSOL) and SolarCity Corp (NASDAQ: SCTY), but is the company finally turning itself around after a failed deal to be acquired?

Yingli Green Energy Holding Company Limited was founded in 1998 and is headquartered in Baoding, the People? s Republic of China.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Travis Hoium]

In China, LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK  ) and Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) are trying to grow in systems but with billions of dollars in debt and extremely low margins they can't compete with First Solar. So, even their higher-efficiency modules put them behind the curve.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

    The impact of solar tariffs
About 80% of the polysilicon used in Chinese solar panels actually comes from the U.S., Europe, and South Korea; if costs go up 53%, they may have to look for alternatives. Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) has already warned that the tariffs will increase costs for Chinese suppliers and that some of the biggest manufacturers would likely be hit by the move. The effect really depends on where you sit, but most major module manufacturers import some of their polysilicon, even if they make the rest in-house.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

    Another record in solar
We've been hearing about solar efficiency records for years. Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) said that its Panda cells reached 19.89% efficiency way back in 2011. Trina Solar's Honey technology can reach 19.6% efficiency. Then there's the efficiency leader, SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) , whose Maxeon cells can be 24% efficient, creating a 21.5% efficient production module.

Ex-Ford exec sues Louisville mayor over comments

A former Ford Motor official has filed a lawsuit alleging the mayor of Louisville, Ky., and a college president of making defamatory statements that cost him his job.

Jay Morgan, described in the lawsuit as a former director of government affairs for Ford, claims he was fired after Mayor Greg Fischer and Simmons College President Kevin Cosby told company officials he had promised them Ford would pay for an advanced manufacturing training center to be built in Louisville.

Morgan denies making such promises and alleges Fischer and Cosby made the statements to get him removed from the project so they could build the training facility in eastern Louisville instead of western Louisville. Morgan is asking for an unspecified amount of damages.

"These are serious allegations," said Shane Sidebottom, Morgan's attorney. "If we did not believe we could bring forward witnesses and documents to prove that, we would not bring it forward."

Both Fischer and Cosby have denied the accusations.

"These allegations against me and Rev. Cosby are outrageous," Fischer said in a written statement. "My team worked hundreds of hours trying to land a significant federal grant to support worker training in Louisville. In fact, JCTC (Jefferson Community and Technical College) and Simmons College submitted a joint application, which was unsuccessful with the U.S. Department of Labor."

Cosby, who is also pastor of St. Stephen Church on South 15th Street and an outspoken advocate for western Louisville, said he had not seen the lawsuit and was advised by his attorney not to comment on pending litigation.

Nevertheless, he said the accusations are "categorically untrue. It's baseless. It's erroneous."

Morgan was sent to Louisville in October 2012 to advocate for the training facility, according to the lawsuit.

Pew: Reading news on Facebook mostly incidental

Facebook's ambition to be a go-to news source may need some work.

A vast majority of U.S. adults who have read news from Facebook - 78% - say they've logged on to the popular social networking site for other reasons, such as browsing photos, says a study by the Pew Research Center released Thursday.

Roughly two-thirds of U.S. adults use Facebook, and half of them have seen news on the site, says the report, completed in collaboration with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. That means about 30% of U.S. adults are considered "Facebook news consumers," says the report, which queried more than 5,000 adults.

"People go to Facebook to share personal moments – and they discover the news almost incidentally," says Amy Mitchell, Pew Research Center's director of journalism research. "The serendipitous nature of news on Facebook may actually increase its importance as a source of news and information, especially among those who do not follow the news closely."

Best Promising Stocks To Own Right Now

Those who don't follow news regularly were more likely to deem Facebook as an "important' news source. Just 38% of Facebook news consumers who say they follow the news "all" or "most of the time" describe Facebook as an important news outlet. For those who follow the news just "some of the time" or less, it was 47%.

Other findings:

* Young people (18- to 29- year-olds) account for about a third (34%) of Facebook news consumers.

* 42% Facebook news consumers often watch local television news, but only 21% of often read print newspapers.

* About half (49%) of Facebook news consumers regularly get news on six or more different topics. Entertainment news is the most popular topic.

* 64% of Facebook news consumers say they at least sometimes click on news links, while 43% post or share links.

* About a third of Facebook news consumers say they prefer news tha! t shares their own point of view, a slightly higher share than the 27% of U.S. adults who say the same.

Congress Votes to End Shutdown, Avoid U.S. Debt Default

WASHINGTON (AP) — Up against a deadline, Congress passed and sent a waiting President Barack Obama legislation late Wednesday night to avoid a threatened national default and end the 16-day partial government shutdown, the culmination of an epic political drama that placed the U.S. economy at risk.

The Senate voted first, a bipartisan 81-18 at midevening. That cleared the way for a final 285-144 vote in the Republican-controlled House about two hours later on the legislation, which hewed strictly to the terms Obama laid down when the twin crises erupted more than three weeks ago.

The legislation would permit the Treasury to borrow normally through Feb. 7 or perhaps a month longer, and fund the government through Jan. 15. More than 2 million federal workers would be paid — those who had remained on the job and those who had been furloughed.

After the Senate approved the measure, Obama hailed the vote and said he would sign it immediately after it reached his desk. "We'll begin reopening our government immediately and we can begin to lift this cloud of uncertainty from our businesses and the American people."

Later, in the House, Rep. Harold Rogers, R-Ky., said, "After two long weeks, it is time to end this government shutdown. It's time to take the threat of default off the table. It's time to restore some sanity to this place."

The stock market surged higher at the prospect of an end to the crisis that also had threatened to shake confidence in the U.S. economy overseas.

Republicans conceded defeat after a long struggle. "We fought the good fight. We just didn't win," conceded House Speaker John Boehner as lawmakers lined up to vote on a bill that includes nothing for GOP lawmakers who had demand to eradicate or scale back Obama's signature health care overhaul.

"The compromise we reached will provide our economy with the stability it desperately needs," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, declaring that the nation "came to the brink of disaster" before sealing an agreement.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who negotiated the deal with Reid, emphasized that it preserved a round of spending cuts negotiated two years ago with Obama and Democrats. As a result, he said, "government spending has declined for two years in a row" for the first time since the Korean War. "And we're not going back on this agreement," he added.

Only a temporary truce, the measure set a time frame of early this winter for the next likely clash between Obama and the Republicans over spending and borrowing.

But for now, government was lurching back to life. Within moments of the House's vote, Sylvia Mathews Burwell, director of the Office of Management and Budget, issued a statement saying "employees should expect to return to work in the morning."

After weeks of gridlock, the measure had support from the White House, most if not all Democrats in Congress and many Republicans fearful of the economic impact of a default.

Boehner and the rest of the top GOP leadership told their rank and file in advance they would vote for the measure. In the end, Republicans split 144 against and 87 in favor. All 198 voting Democrats were supporters.

Final passage came in plenty of time to assure Obama's signature before the administration's 11:59 p.m. Thursday deadline.

That was when Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said the government would reach the current $16.7 trillion debt limit and could no longer borrow to meet its obligations.

Tea party-aligned lawmakers who triggered the shutdown that began on Oct. 1 said they would vote against the legislation. Significantly, though, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and others agreed not to use the Senate's cumbersome 18th-century rules to slow the bill's progress.

In remarks on the Senate floor, Cruz said the measure was "a terrible deal" and criticized fellow Republicans for lining up behind it.

McConnell made no mention of the polls showing that the shutdown and flirtation with default have sent Republicans' public approval plummeting and have left the party badly split nationally as well as in his home state of Kentucky. He received a prompt reminder, though.

"When the stakes are highest Mitch McConnell can always be counted on to sell out conservatives," said Matt Bevin, who is challenging the party leader from the right in a 2014 election primary.

More broadly, national tea party groups and their allies underscored the internal divide. The Club for Growth urged lawmakers to vote against the congressional measure, and said it would factor in the organization's decision when it decides which candidates to support in midterm elections next year.

"There are no significant changes to Obamacare, nothing on the other major entitlements that are racked with trillions in unfunded liabilities, and no meaningful spending cuts either. If this bill passes, Congress will kick the can down the road, yet again," the group said.

Even so, support for Boehner appeared solid inside his fractious rank and file. "There are no plots, plans or rumblings that I know of. And I was part of one in January, so I'd probably be on the whip list for that," said Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce came out in favor of the bill.

Simplicity at the end, there was next to nothing in the agreement beyond authorization for the Treasury to resume borrowing and funding for the government to reopen.

House and Senate negotiators are to meet this fall to see if progress is possible on a broad deficit-reduction compromise of the type that has proved elusive in the current era of divided government.

Additionally, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is to be required to produce a report stating that her agency is capable of verifying the incomes of individuals who apply for federal subsidies under the health care law known as Obamacare.

Obama had insisted repeatedly he would not pay "ransom" by yielding to Republican demands for significant changes to the health care overhaul in exchange for funding the government and permitting Treasury the borrowing latitude to pay the nation's bills.

Other issues fell by the wayside in a final deal, including a Republican proposal for the suspension of a medical device tax in Obamacare and a Democratic call to delay a fee on companies for everyone who receives health coverage under an employer-sponsored plan.

The gradual withering of Republicans' Obamacare-related demands defined the arc of the struggle that has occupied virtually all of Congress' time for the past three weeks.

The shutdown began on Oct. 1 after Cruz and his tea party allies in the House demanded the defunding of the health care law as a trade for providing essential government funding.

Obama and Reid refused, then refused again and again as Boehner gradually scaled back Republican demands.

The shutdown initially idled about 800,000 workers, but that soon fell to about 350,000 after Congress agreed to let furloughed Pentagon employees return to work. While there was widespread inconvenience, the mail was delivered, Medicare continued to pay doctors who treated seniors and there was no interruption in Social Security benefits.

Still, national parks were closed to the detriment of tourists and local businesses, government research scientists were sent home and Food and Drug Administration inspectors worked only sporadically.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By ovenerio]

The company has a current ROE of 18.18% which is higher than the industry median and the ones exhibited by Legg Mason (LM) and Invesco (IVZ). In general, analysts consider ROE ratios in the 15-20% range as representing attractive levels for investment. So for investors looking those levels or more, KKR & Co. (KKR), SEI Investments (SEIC) and T. Rowe Price Group I! nc. (TROW! ) could be the option. It is very important to understand this metric before investing and it is important to look at the trend in ROE over time.
