10 Best Beverage Stocks To Buy For 2014

Late night snacking is about to get ugly.

Nutritionally speaking, that is. A gut-stuffing line-up of four late-night meals -- including one that actually stacks a grilled cheese sandwich atop an already gloppy cheeseburger -- is rolling out at Jack in the Box restaurants nationwide.

The nighttime meal offerings which also come packed with two tacos, a mixed order of French fries and seasoned curly fries and a 20 oz. beverage almost make Hardee's once-heckled Monster Burger look, well, tame. They're called Jack's Munchie Meals only sold between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Price-tag: $6.

"They are a disaster," says registered dietitian Robyn Flipse. "They must have hired some very stoned Millennials to dream this stuff up."

Not at all, says Keith Guilbault, vice president of menu innovation at Jack in the Box, which has 2,250 locations in 21 states. "This is targeted at folks looking for indulgent treats," he says. Among them: late-night shift workers and Millennials who get the munchies at odd hours.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rich Duprey]

Part of the problem is the changing tastes of consumers. In addition to craft beer's popularity, hard ciders and teas are gaining popularity, too. Boston Beersaw depletions grow 16% last quarter primarily because of the emphasis it placed on its Angry Orchard cider and Twisted Teas, and Bud recently introduced its Stella Artois Cidre brand. Last year, bothSABMiller and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) acquiredcider maker Crispin through their MillerCoors joint venture.

  • [By Alyce Lomax]

Still, it's a sticky area. When you think of volume and sales growth some of the best, most "loyal" customers for companies like Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) , Boston Beer (NYSE: SAM  ) , Anheuser-Busch (NYSE: BUD  ) , and Brown-Forman (NYSE: BF-B  ) are going to be some of their most addicted and most troubled ones. If enough people curbed their intake -- obviously an important part of many people getting well -- the industry would have a real problem to contend with. Like tobacco, a whole lot of quitters shrinks the market.

  • [By Rex Moore]

The craft brewing industry saw 15% volume growth in 2012, while the big guys -- led by Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: BUD  ) , SABMiller, and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) -- are watching their megabrands lose market share.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Louis Navellier]

Publicly traded Craft Brew Alliance (BREW) is the owner of three key craft beer brands. The company, through two mergers, owns the brands Redhook, Widmer, and Kona. Small cap Sodastream International Ltd (NASDAQ: SODA), an Israeli based developer, manufacturer and marketer ofhome beverage carbonation systems, has attracted its share of hype over both its products and its stock, but could other small cap water stocks like Primo Water Corporation (NASDAQ: PRMW), Puresafe Water Systems Inc (OTCMKTS: PSWS) and Alkaline Water Company Inc (OTCBB: WTER) attract a similar following? After Zulily Stock Tanked 66%, Is Now the Time to Buy?

The difference between Zulily's potential and its performance is black and white. Its future should be bright if it can get beyond the problems holding back its stock. Image:

So much promise, so many opportunities, and so little to show for it. E-commerce retailer Zulily (NASDAQ: ZU  ) seems to have squandered most of its potential since going public. After hitting $73 a share soon after its IPO in November 2013, the stock of the mom-focused website has cratered and lost two-thirds of its value.

The problems that caused its latest loss of value may be temporary in nature, so with the stock 66% below its 52-week high, does this represent a good buy-in opportunity for investors?

What's the matter this time?
In the third quarter Zulily had a breakdown in communications, or as the e-tailer called them, "email deliverability challenges." During its conference call last month, management said a number of its subscribers didn't receive its emails for "a period of time" and that deliverability challenges are something it deals with "from time to time." An analyst at ITG Research followed up in December with a research note saying that new customer activations at Zulily had slowed in Q4.

Because it typically takes several months for a new customer to make her first purchase, and the email issue likely slowed the company's customer activations, fourth quarter sales will likely be depressed.

ITG's somber outlook helped caused Zulily's stocks to tumble more than 7% in a day last week, building on the sustained collapse in share price investors have suffered through since February when shares peaked at $73.50 a stub. The 52-week low for the stock was $22.61, according to S&P Capital IQ data. That price was notched last week after the ITG report came out. Because "deliverability challenges" are a recurring problem for the e-commerce site, investors should count on volatility being a hallmark of this stock.

ZU Chart

ZU data by YCharts

What happened before?
Zulily uses big data to create predictive modeling to determine who will buy what when. While that reliance upon information has led to surging sales -- they were up 72% in the third quarter and are 84% higher over the first nine months of 2014 -- it hasn't helped it to improve delivery times.

Slow shipping is plaguing the e-tailer. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the time it took Zulily to ship a product from its warehouses after receiving an order last year was an average of 11.5 days, much worse than rivals like Rue La La and Gilt, let alone industry leaders such as (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) , which pioneered two-day shipping.

The reason is that Zulily doesn't stock most merchandise, but rather places orders with manufacturers once a sale is completed, which bulk ships it to Zulily's warehouses. According to StellaService data, the situation improves significantly for products Zulily does keep in stock, but fulfillment speed still lags its rivals.

Zulily -- 3.7 days Gilt -- 2.9 days Rue La La -- 2.3 days Hautelook -- 2.1 days Ideeli -- 1.4 days

Zulily is also knocked for relatively high shipping fees at a time when free delivery is becoming more popular.

What might the future hold?
Zulily views the email issues as not much of a concern. They happen from time to time, but it works through the problem with its email provider as they arise.

Delivery might be a stickier concern, but management believes its customers aren't necessarily looking for immediate gratification. They come to its site looking for unique daily deals, not quick shipments. And it is opening a new warehouse soon to help relieve pressure, while also investing in automation and a mobile app to help ameliorate the worst of it.

As Zulily is not about to stop operating on an "inventory-lite" model, however, shipping is still going to be a problem.

So is it a buy?
Speedy delivery seems to be the key to retail success these days. Amazon is among the companies experimenting with same-day delivery. Zulily's customers might not be as concerned as Amazon customers in getting their packages as soon as possible, but slow ship times will limit its ability to grow.

With email problems also likely to be recurring and competition only getting more intense (and shipping faster to boot), it seems hard to envision Zulily being a long-term success. I can't see buying in, even at this depressed price.

One bleeding-edge technology is about to put the World-Wide-Web to bed. It could make early investors wildly rich. Top 10 Consumer Service Companies To Own In Right Now

NEW YORK (The Deal) -- Augusta Resources (AZC) said it will meet this week regarding a $375 million offer from Hudbay Minerals (HBM) to acquire the mining company.

Hudbay said it would offer 0.315 of a share for each Augusta share, which represents a 62% premium to Augusta's 20-day average trading price. Hudbay is a copper- and zinc-mining company based in Toronto with a Peruvian copper asset by the name Constancia. Hudbay said that the acquisition of Augusta's Rosemont project will enhance its portfolio of long-life, low-cost mining projects.

Rosemont is an Arizona-based copper mine that Augusta said it expects, when ramped up, will account for as much as 10% of U.S. copper production.

Hudbay already owns 16% of Augusta and said it has been considering an acquisition of Augusta for four years, since it began its investment in the company in 2010. The advance of its production at Constancia provides an optimal opportunity to move on the Rosemont project, Hudbay said. Hudbay also recognized on a conference call that it expects other bidders might move on Augusta. It is Augusta's fiduciary responsibility to shop the company, Hudbay said and it expects that they will do so. Hudbay also said it knows exactly what its price for Augusta is, and it will tender its 16% interest if another bidder tops the offer. The presumption is that the initial bid is not the final offer. Augusta shares traded Monday up about 25%, to $2.85, at a premium of about 30 cents, or 12%, to the current bid. Hudbay said its offer is not conditioned on due diligence or financing. An offer is expected to have an initial expiration of March 19 and require at least two-thirds of Augusta shares be tendered. In December, Hudbay raised $100 million to fund operations and said its credit facility and revenue from a joint venture with Silver Wheaton Corp. will assist in funding the proposed takeover. Hudbay said it expects to be able to fund the ramp up of the Rosemont mine internally and execute it on a more expedited schedule. Hudbay also said it did not expect any significant permitting issues for the Rosemont project or regulatory issues for getting a merger completed.

We initiated a small position in Wesco Aircraft Holdings (WAIR) during the quarter. Wesco is a distributor and supply chain manager to the commercial and military aerospace markets. The company should benefit from the multi-year commercial aerospace build-out that is underway. We expect this tailwind to provide visible growth through at least 2017. Wesco also has an opportunity to provide more services to large defense contractors as funding pressures force the industry to become more efficient. If the company can improve margins along the way, we think the resulting earnings growth could provide reasonable-to-good return potential for the stock. From Wallace Weitz (Trades, Portfolio)'s first quarter 2014 report. Also check out: Wallace Weitz Undervalued Stocks Wallace Weitz Top Growth Companies Wallace Weitz High Yield stocks, and Stocks that Wallace Weitz keeps buying Currently 0.00/512345

Among holdings in which Passport Capital increased its stake were Yamana Goldand Solazyme. Passport Capital reduced its stake in lots of companies, including Southern Copperand global steel giant Arcelor Mittal (NYSE: MT  ) , the latter of which has been facing a weak steel market, especially in Europe, and carries a lot of debt, while not producing gobs of free cash flow lately. Still, some see it as promisingly priced now, with a forward P/E near 9, and a global economic recovery likely. Rising auto sales bode well for the steel company, too. Its stock is yielding about 5.6%.

Time magazine labeled the French factory in Amiens as Goodyear's "nightmare." Despite trying to work with the unions over the years to change work hours or eliminate redundancies and prevent just such an outcome, the unions thwarted every entreaty. The government has a heavy-handed way of dealing with closures and layoffs, for example castigating ArcelorMittal (NYSE: MT  ) for also having the temerity to want to close down an unprofitable facility. So just because Goodyear says it wants to end the bloodletting doesn't mean it will happen anytime soon.

And about Pepsi, he says that it been out of favor during the tech years but a lot of defensive names are all the rage, and is your portfolio tilted towards consumer defensive names because of your macroeconomic view, and it seems a more contrarian approach would be a more bullish approach on cyclicals like ArcelorMittal (MT) or Fiat (FIA).

In our view, X’s recent outperformance of its closest peer [ArcelorMittal (MT), and the iron ore price, will reverse over coming months. Unlike 2012/13 when iron ore prices rebounded to $160/t post the destock, we see the iron ore price settling at a structurally lower level in 2H2014. Finally we note that X needs a ~4x increase in the pace of its 'Project Carnegie' initiatives in order to maintain its position on the US domestic cost curve
